About
David Jayakar, M.D., M.S., has been director of cardiovascular services at Longview Regional Hospital since 2010. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Jayakar has a special interest in minimally invasive cardiac, vascular, and thoracic surgery. He also performs transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair and introduced bloodless cardiac surgery, off-pump beating heart bypass surgery and the “Fistula First” program to Longview Regional Hospital.
Dr. Jayakar grew up in Madras, India, where he attended Madras Christian High School. His undergraduate work was done at Madras University where he graduated as the valedictory student. Dr. Jayakar spent one year at Southampton General Hospital in England for advanced training in neonatal cardiac surgery. He completed his surgical residency at State University of New York and moved to Tucson, Arizona, where he completed his fellowship training in cardiovascular surgery at University Medical Center under the guidance of Dr. Jack Copeland. He joined the University of Chicago Hospital’s department of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in 1999. To stay closer to his family, he moved to St. Catherine Hospital in 2003 and to St Vincent's Hospital in 2008.
Dr. Jayakar has authored or co-authored numerous articles and papers in leading scientific journals, and book chapters in textbooks on cardiovascular disease. His publications cover a wide range of topics including adult cardiac surgery, transplant surgery, ventricular assist devices, surgical pathology, heart failure and atrial fibrillation. He also holds a trade certificate in radio engineering and has invented many surgical and medical instruments. He has been a member of the American College of Cardiology, American College of Surgeons, American Heart Association, American Medical Association, Ohio Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, Ohio State Medical Association, and The American Association for Thoracic Surgery, Cleveland Academy of Medicine, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and the American Surgical Association.
Dr Jayakar pioneered the adaptation of beating heart surgery, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, minimally invasive cardiac arrhythmia surgery (maze procedure), minimally invasive lung and vascular surgery. He has been prolific in his clinical work and has achieved 0% yearly mortality for beating heart bypass many times. Dr. Jayakar loves spending time with his family. His hobbies include photography, computer technology, electronics and listening to country and praise and worship music.
